In this article, I will tell you how Solidity made me a millionaire.
How Solidity unlocked my career
It’s so crazy.
Learning Solidity only took me a few month, and it completely changed my career. I wasn’t much more skilled after learning Solidity, I was the same guy. But just because I could put this skill on my CV I started to receive A LOT of interest from recruiters:
- That’s how I got my first 6-figure remote job.
- A few years after that job, I made my first million, and it was all thanks to Solidity.
For a guy like me who was completely stuck as a web developer, it was a game changer. Before, my career had reached a plateau as a Javascript dev, and Solidity really unlocked me.
What makes Solidity so special?
Solidity is a very special programming language.
It’s used in crypto, by Blockchain developers. It’s used in small programs called “smart contracts”. What make these smart contract so special is that they run on the Blockchain. And they have very different properties compared to traditional programs, like web applications.
I am not gonna go in the details, but all you have to know is that these smart contracts are key components of Blockchain app. Whenever you hear about some Blockchain app that is getting very popular, there is a smart contract at the core of it.
For example, Polymarket, the famous Blockchain app that predicted to election of Donald Trump, is based on a smart contract. When users make a bet on Polymarket, this bet goes into a smart contract.
Ok, and what about Solidity?
Solidity is the programming language used for these smart contracts. When a company wants to make a Blockchain app, they will need a smart contract, and they will need a Solidity developer. And they aren’t that many qualified Solidity developers.
That’s why Solidity is so special.
And next I am going to tell you how I leveraged my Solidity skills to become a millionaire.
Baby steps in programming
So I didn’t start my career as a Solidity developer
I started in Finance, working a corporate job. Not technical at all. I didn’t like it.
One day, I met a software developer that was working remotely and making good money. He sold me the dream of making 6-figure, working remotely, and working on something you love. I decided to do the same.
Luckily, my roomate connected me with someone who needed a website. That’s how I found my first customer.
After, I found more customers by organizing tech meetups. I was doing WordPress websites, in PHP. Good for beginning, but a bit limited if you ant to find better customers.
So I decided to level up by learning Javascript and React. Thanks to this, I found better customers. 1 year after that, I wanted to level up again by finding a remote 6 figure job. But I kept getting rejection, or worse, ignored.
First 6-Figure job with Solidity
That’s when I stumbled upon Blockchain and Solidity. I fell in love instantly. I decided to learn everything I could about this technology. I shared my journey on Youtube and LinkedIn. 3 month after, I found my first 6-Figure remote job as a Blockchain developer. A massive increase in my income.
That’s insane what a difference it can make to be position on a good niche. I was the same guy, and yet I became much more in-demand overnight.
From $100k to 1M with Solidity
1 year after, I quit this job to go back to freelance. This top I had a much better pipeline of customers. Thanks to my presence on social media I received new requests regularly. My income increased again.
I also added a new stream of income by selling Solidity trainings. Another massive boost in my income.
In 3 years, I became a millionaire. And this is all thanks to Solidity.
When I look back that’s crazy, because I remember being this poor WordPRess / PHP developer that was stuck in his career. If you had told me that in a few years I would make my first million I would not have believed you.
How can you become a Solidity millionaire?
So what can we learn from this story?
First, choosing the right tech niche is essential:
- Some tech niche are more or less saturated
- Some tech niche tend to have better customers.
- Some tech niche have more or less competition.
Right now, in 2024, Blockchain is one the best niche you can pick as a software developer. A lot of companies are hiring, and it’s hard to find good Blockchain developers. That’s why if you become a competent Blockchain developer, you will be in high demand.
Now, another lesson is that tech niche are very volatile:
- One tech niche might be hot for a few years…
- …And then it changes to something else
- For example, when I first picked up Javascript and React in 2015, it was the hot new thing. But now, these skills are a commodity.
When you find a tech niche that you want to jump into, don’t wait too long, because you never know how long the hype is going to last.
Once you are in, you are in though. 5 year later, if the Blockchain hype cool off but you are already a Blockchain developer, it doesn’t matter, because now you are a senior, and seniors always have job security.
What’s more difficult is to get in as a junior, not just in Blockchain, but in any tech niche. So your best bet to get started as a junior is to take advantage of a hot job market, when there are more opportunities, like its the case right now in Blockchain.
Now, another lesson from my story.
Technical skills are very important, but not enough, especially if you want a remote job. What you also need is to learn how to sell yourself.
There are different ways you can do this. One the most efficient way I found was to be active on social media.
So I know, if you are a tech person, you probably don’t want to become an influencer. And you don’t need to. On my Youtube channel I have something like 165k subscribers.
You don’t need that many subscribers. You also don’t need to make videos. What I recommend is much more simple:
- Just go on LinkedIn. And start to post about your learning journey.
- As you learn new things, just post them on LinkedIn, with short articles.
- If you do this regularly, you will start to get some followers, and recruiters will start to notice you.
And last lesson from my story is to start getting real, work experience with freelance.
A lot of beginners complain they don’t hear back from recruiters. But everything becomes much more simple when you can show that you already had some real, work experience.
And getting a first freelance gig is vastly easier than getting your first job, when you are junior. It’s a great way to get your foot in the door. And after, you can level-up to a full-time – if you want to. But staying freelance can be a good choice too.
Now I can’t guarantee that if you do this you will become a Solidity millionaire like I did. But if you are a serious dude, you stay in the industry for a couple of years, you will become senior Blockchain developer.
And that’s when the magic happen. That’s when salaries start to get really high. It can go to 200, 300k per year. So if you make that kind of money, you just need a few years to make a million.
Black Friday
On November 29th, I am launching a brand new Blockchain academy, the 30 Day Academy. This is going to a course platform based on challenges. You will have one challenge per day, for 30 day.
And for the launch on Black Friday, I am going to do a special deal. To receive this deal, register with this link.
All right, that’s it for today, bye!
